PITCHED ROOFING IN MANCHESTER.
Repairs and re-roofing for gable, hipped and dormer roofs. ADI Roofing Team Manchester looks after the whole of a pitched roof, from the ridge down to the eaves.

Pitched roofs in Manchester: from ridge to eaves
Most houses have a pitched roof: two or more sloping sides meeting at a ridge, covered in slates or tiles and carried on timber rafters. It is a tough design, but its many junctions (ridges, hips, valleys, verges and abutments) are where it tends to fail first.
ADI Roofing Team Manchester carries out pitched roof repairs and replacement on gable, hipped, mono-pitched and dormer roofs. The work covers the whole roof, the structure and underlay as well as the covering, and the details that keep it watertight.
For the covering itself, see slate and tile roofing. For a complete re-roof, see roof replacement.

THE WORK
WHAT PITCHED ROOF WORK COVERS
Repairs, partial re-roofing and complete replacement.
Pitched roof repairs
Replacing damaged slates and tiles, refixing ridges and hips, repairing valleys and verges and dealing with leaks at junctions.
Re-roofing a pitched roof
Stripping the covering and underlay, repairing the timber and re-roofing with a new underlay, battens and covering.
Dormers, porches and bay roofs
Smaller roofs on and around a house need the same attention as the main roof, and their junctions often cause problems.
Chimneys and leadwork
Flashings, soakers and chimney stacks form part of the roof, and are covered on the chimney repairs and leadwork page.
WHAT GOES WRONG
WHERE PITCHED ROOFS FAIL
The usual weak points on a pitched roof.
01
Ridge and hip tiles
Mortar bedding cracks and ridge tiles loosen, letting water in at the very top of the roof.
02
Valleys
Where two roof slopes meet, large volumes of water run down a narrow channel. Valley linings wear out, and debris blocks them.
03
Verges
The gable edge of the roof can lose its mortar or fixings and let wind-driven rain in.
04
Slipped or broken coverings
Slates and tiles that have shifted or cracked, often in a line or a patch.
05
A tired underlay
Old felt can tear or perish, so it no longer provides a second line of defence.
06
Dormers and abutments
The joints where a pitched roof meets a dormer, wall or chimney need sound flashings.
ROOF FORMS AND DETAILS
PITCHED ROOF TYPES
The shape of the roof affects the details that need attention.
Gable roofs
Two slopes meeting at a ridge with a gable wall at each end. The verges at the gable edge need to be well secured.
Hipped roofs
Slopes on all sides, joined by hips. Hip tiles and their fixings are a key point.
Mono-pitch and lean-to
A single slope, often on an extension or porch, usually meeting a wall that needs a good flashing.
Dormer roofs
Small roofs set into the main roof, with valleys, cheeks and flashings that must all be watertight.

FAQS
Questions homeowners ask
Quick answers. Call if yours is not here.
Prefer to talk it through?
What is a pitched roof?
A pitched roof has sloping sides, rather than being flat. Gable, hipped and mono-pitch roofs are all pitched roofs, and they are covered in slates or tiles.
Where do pitched roofs usually leak?
Most often at ridges, hips, valleys, verges and around chimneys and roof windows, where there are joints and flashings. Missing or slipped slates and tiles are the other common cause.
Can part of a pitched roof be replaced?
Yes, if the rest of the roof is in good condition and the new section can be matched. If the whole covering is ageing, partial work may only delay the problem.
How do I know my pitched roof underlay has failed?
Signs include damp patches in the loft, torn felt visible from inside and drips when a tile is displaced. A roof survey can confirm the condition.
